Breath testing is performed at home and sent via mail to a third party laboratory, and can determine whether or not a patient has an excessive amount of bacteria in the small bowel (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), if there is an intolerance to fructose, or an intolerance to lactose. One or all of the tests may be ordered, but only one test can be done at a time. The testing lasts approximately three hours. Your provider’s office can assist you with questions.
The most common symptoms for which these tests are ordered are:
- Excess gas
- Abdominal bloating and distension
- Abdominal pain
